Abolboda poarchon is a herbaceous monocot in the family Xyridaceae, order Poales, belonging to the genus Abolboda, a group of approximately 20 species endemic to tropical South America. The species is native to the Guiana region, inhabiting the open savanna landscapes, tepui highlands, and seasonally flooded grasslands of Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and adjacent areas of northern Brazil. These habitats are characterized by nutrient-poor, highly acidic sandy or lateritic soils that support a specialized flora largely absent from surrounding tropical forests. The specific epithet poarchon derives from Greek roots related to grass, suggesting a morphological resemblance to grassy plants or an affinity with grass-dominated communities. This is consistent with the general appearance of Abolboda species, which closely resemble rushes or grasses in their vegetative form, producing dense rosettes of narrow, linear leaves from a compact basal stem. The leaves are erect and somewhat stiff, with parallel venation typical of monocots. Abolboda poarchon produces slender flowering scapes that rise above the leaf rosette and bear compact spikes of small, trimerous flowers, consistent with the family plan of the Xyridaceae. The petals are likely blue to violet in color, as is typical for many members of the genus. Pollination is accomplished by small insects visiting the flowers for nectar or pollen. The Xyridaceae family as a whole belongs to the order Poales, which is one of the largest orders of monocotyledonous plants and includes economically important families such as grasses and sedges. The genus Abolboda is closely related to Xyris, the largest genus in the family with over 350 species distributed pantropically.
