Aequatorium cajamarcense

Aequatorium cajamarcense is a perennial herb or subshrub in the family Asteraceae, belonging to the genus Aequatorium, a small Neotropical genus distributed along the Andes of South America. The genus Aequatorium has undergone taxonomic revision and was segregated from the broader genus Senecio based on molecular and morphological evidence. The epithet 'cajamarcense' clearly denotes the species' origin in or near the Cajamarca region of northern Peru, a biodiversity hotspot within the Andes that harbors numerous endemic plant species owing to its complex topography and diverse microclimates. This taxon inhabits montane forest margins, shrubby páramo, and disturbed Andean habitats at mid to high elevations, typically between 2,000 and 3,500 meters above sea level. Like related Andean composites, Aequatorium cajamarcense likely produces alternate, petiolate leaves with toothed or lobed margins, and branched inflorescences bearing radiate capitula with yellow ray and disc florets. The involucre is typically hemispherical with one to two rows of phyllaries. Achenes are ribbed with a pappus of white capillary bristles. The Cajamarca highlands support a distinct assemblage of endemic flora, and this species represents an example of the fine-scale endemism produced by the complex Andean landscape. Ongoing deforestation and agricultural expansion in the Peruvian Andes pose significant threats to many montane endemic species, underscoring the importance of botanical documentation and conservation efforts in this region.
