Abies forrestii, commonly known as Forrest's fir, is an evergreen coniferous tree in the family Pinaceae, order Pinales. Native to southwestern China and the adjacent regions of northern Myanmar and southeastern Tibet, it is distributed across the mountain ranges of Yunnan, Sichuan, and Xizang provinces, where it forms forests at elevations typically between 3,000 and 4,500 meters. The species favors cool, moist subalpine habitats with rich, well-drained soils, often growing alongside other conifers and rhododendrons in mixed montane forests. Mature trees can reach heights of 30 to 40 meters, developing the characteristic conical silhouette associated with high-mountain firs. The bark is smooth and grayish on young trees, becoming rougher and darker with age. Needles are flattened, with deep green upper surfaces and conspicuous white stomatal bands beneath. Abies forrestii is particularly noted for its ornamentally striking blue-black to deep violet-purple young seed cones, which stand erect on the upper branches and are among the most colorful in the genus. These cones mature and disintegrate on the tree, scattering winged seeds across the surrounding terrain. The species is named in honor of the Scottish plant hunter George Forrest, who collected extensively in southwestern China during the early twentieth century. It is cultivated in botanical gardens and parks in temperate regions for its attractive foliage and vivid juvenile cones.
