Abolboda egleri

Abolboda egleri is a perennial herb in the family Xyridaceae, order Poales. The species is named in honour of Adolpho Ducke Egler or another botanist surnamed Egler who contributed to the study of Neotropical flora, continuing the tradition of commemorating botanical collectors and researchers through species names. Abolboda egleri inhabits the Neotropical region, primarily in the Guiana Highlands and associated lowlands of northern South America, where the genus Abolboda has its centre of diversity. The tepui ecosystems of this region, characterised by ancient Precambrian sandstone plateaus, waterlogged peaty or sandy soils, high rainfall, and intense solar radiation, harbour one of the world's most distinctive and endemic floras. As a member of Xyridaceae, Abolboda egleri is a rush-like perennial herb with narrow, often linear leaves in basal tufts and slender flower scapes bearing terminal inflorescences. The flowers have three petals, typically blue or violet, and open briefly each day in a pattern common to the family. Pollination is by bees, and the resulting small capsular fruits release minute seeds dispersed by wind or seasonal flooding. The family Xyridaceae is most species-rich in the Neotropics and sub-Saharan Africa, with the genus Abolboda restricted entirely to the Americas. Conservation of the tepui habitats where this and related species grow is critical, as these ecosystems are vulnerable to burning, mining, and the long-term impacts of climate change on the hydrology of high-altitude wetlands.
