Abolboda sprucei is a herbaceous monocot in the family Xyridaceae, order Poales, named in honor of Richard Spruce, the celebrated nineteenth-century English botanist and bryologist who conducted extensive botanical explorations of the Amazon basin and Andes between 1849 and 1864. Spruce's collections form an invaluable foundation for understanding the flora of tropical South America, and numerous plant species carry his name in recognition of this contribution. Abolboda sprucei is native to the tropical savannas, tepui highlands, and seasonally flooded wetlands of the Guiana region, including Venezuela, Guyana, northern Brazil, and adjacent territories. The plant grows in the characteristically nutrient-poor, acidic soils of white-sand savannas, wet rocky outcrops, and boggy grasslands that define the landscape of the Guiana Shield, one of the oldest geological formations on Earth. Vegetatively, Abolboda sprucei conforms to the general plan of its genus, forming a compact rosette of linear, stiff, upright leaves from a short basal stem. The leaves are narrow and parallel-veined, a typical monocot feature, and are well suited to the high-light, open conditions of its savanna habitat. Erect, slender flowering scapes rise above the leafy rosette and terminate in dense spikes of small trimerous flowers. The petals are most likely blue to violet in color, consistent with the predominant coloration in the genus Abolboda. This species, like all members of its genus, contributes to the remarkable ecological diversity of the Guiana Highlands, a global biodiversity hotspot known for its high levels of plant endemism and ancient geological heritage.
