Saussurea sughoo

Saussurea sughoo is a perennial herb in the family Asteraceae, belonging to the genus Saussurea, a large group of thistlelike plants distributed primarily across alpine, subalpine, and montane habitats in Asia, with particular diversity in the Himalayan and Tibetan Plateau regions. The genus comprises approximately 400 species, many of which are adapted to extreme high-altitude environments including rocky screes, glacial moraines, and alpine meadows. The epithet 'sughoo' likely refers to a local place name or vernacular designation from the plant's area of distribution, which falls within the broader Himalayan flora zone. Like other Saussurea species, this plant produces a basal rosette of leaves that may be entire, toothed, or pinnately lobed, often with a woolly or felted undersurface that provides insulation and reflects UV radiation in high-elevation environments.
