Aa trilobulata is a terrestrial orchid belonging to the family Orchidaceae, order Asparagales, and the Andean genus Aa. The species epithet trilobulata derives from the Latin tri- ('three') and lobulatus ('lobed'), indicating that this species bears a distinctively three-lobed structure — most likely the lip (labellum) of the flower, which is the morphologically variable and taxonomically informative petal-like organ in orchid flowers. The three-lobed lip of Aa trilobulata likely distinguishes it from other members of the genus, many of which bear more simply shaped lips, and represents an important character in the identification and circumscription of this species. Like all Aa orchids, Aa trilobulata is a compact herbaceous perennial that grows in the high-altitude grasslands and shrublands of the South American Andes, including the páramo biome of northern South America and the puna of the central and southern Andes. The plant forms a basal rosette of firm, elliptic leaves adapted to cold temperatures and strong UV radiation at high elevations, from which an erect flowering spike rises to bear numerous small, closely arranged flowers. Each flower has three sepals, two lateral petals, the distinctive three-lobed lip, and a fused column housing the reproductive organs. The three-lobed lip may function to guide pollinators more precisely toward the column, enhancing pollination efficiency. Aa trilobulata inhabits nutrient-poor, often acidic soils and depends on mycorrhizal fungal associations for nutrient uptake and successful seedling establishment. Conservation of high-Andean grassland habitats is essential for this species' survival.
