Astragalus gummifer

Astragalus gummifer

Astragalus gummifer is a spiny cushion-forming perennial native to Turkey, Iran, and the surrounding Middle East. It is one of several milkvetch species commercially harvested for tragacanth gum, a natural thickening agent obtained from the dried stem exudate. The plant grows on rocky mountain slopes and alpine meadows, forming impenetrable thorny domes that protect it from grazing animals.
