Odessa tansy

Tanacetum odessanum is a perennial herb in the family Asteraceae, native to the Odessa region of Ukraine and adjacent areas of the Black Sea coast in southeastern Europe. The genus Tanacetum, commonly known as tansies and feverfews, comprises approximately 160 species distributed across Eurasia and northern Africa, with particular diversity in the Mediterranean and Irano-Turanian regions. The species epithet 'odessanum' denotes its geographic origin near Odessa, reflecting a localized distribution typical of many Tanacetum microspecies in the Pontic steppe region. Like related tansies, this species likely produces erect, aromatic stems with pinnately divided or pinnatisect leaves bearing characteristic glands containing volatile oils responsible for the pungent scent. Capitula are typically radiate or discoid, often grouped in dense corymbs, with yellow florets. Ray florets, when present, are short and inconspicuous, while disc florets are numerous and fertile. Phyllaries are imbricate with membranous margins. Tanacetum species favor open, disturbed, and steppic habitats, colonizing roadsides, railway embankments, dry grasslands, and rocky slopes. The Pontic-Caspian steppe harbors numerous endemic and near-endemic plant species, and Tanacetum odessanum represents the floristic diversity of this transitional zone between European and Central Asian vegetation. Tansies have traditionally been used in ethnobotanical contexts across Eurasia, though many contain thujone and other potentially toxic compounds. Conservation of this regionally restricted taxon depends on the preservation of native steppe vegetation in Ukraine.
