Aa calceata is a terrestrial orchid classified within the family Orchidaceae, order Asparagales. It belongs to the genus Aa, a small genus of ground-dwelling orchids native to the high-altitude grasslands and shrublands of the Andes mountain range in South America. The species epithet calceata derives from the Latin word for 'wearing shoes' or 'slipper-shaped', which likely refers to a distinctive morphological feature of the lip or labellum of the flower — the slipper-like shape being a recurring theme in orchid nomenclature. Aa calceata grows as a herbaceous perennial from a basal rosette of leaves, producing an upright flowering stem bearing many small, closely spaced flowers. The rosette leaves are typically firm, elliptic, and somewhat fleshy, characteristics common to high-Andean plants that must endure strong solar radiation and cold nights. The flowers, while small individually, are arranged in a dense spike that makes the plant visible in its open grassland habitat. As in other Aa species, the flowers exhibit the complex bilateral symmetry and specialized reproductive structures typical of the Orchidaceae. The genus Aa is considered closely related to the genus Myrosmodes and several other small-flowered Andean orchid genera. Aa calceata inhabits the puna and páramo zones of the Andes, occurring in countries such as Bolivia, Peru, or Ecuador depending on its precise distribution. These ecosystems are characterized by short grasses, cushion plants, and rocky outcrops at elevations often exceeding 3,000 meters. Conservation of these high-Andean habitats is critical for this species.
