Glossocardia calva

Glossocardia calva is an annual or short-lived perennial herb in the family Asteraceae, belonging to the small genus Glossocardia, which contains only a few species distributed across tropical and subtropical Asia and Africa. The genus name Glossocardia derives from Greek words meaning 'tongue-shaped fruit,' referring to the distinctive elongated achenes that characterize the group. The epithet 'calva' means 'bald' or 'naked' in Latin, likely referring to the absence of a pappus or to glabrous (hairless) features of the plant or its fruits. This small composite is typically a slender, branched herb reaching 20–50 centimeters in height, with narrow leaves that may be opposite or alternate depending on position. Capitula are small, borne on slender peduncles, with both ray and disc florets, though the ray florets are often inconspicuous or absent. The involucre is small with two rows of phyllaries of unequal length. Glossocardia species inhabit disturbed ground, sandy soils, roadsides, fallows, and dry open habitats, often appearing as weedy colonizers of disturbed agricultural land. The genus has its center of distribution in South and Southeast Asia, with some species extending into Africa and Australia. Plants of this genus are ecologically adapted to seasonally dry conditions and tolerate nutrient-poor soils. Seed dispersal is primarily by wind or attachment to passing animals. While not of major economic importance, Glossocardia species contribute to the biodiversity of ruderal plant communities across tropical regions.
