Abolboda linearifolia is a herbaceous monocot belonging to the family Xyridaceae, within the order Poales, distributed across the tropical savannas and wetland habitats of northern South America. The species epithet linearifolia, meaning linear-leaved, refers to the distinctively narrow, elongated leaves that are among the defining morphological features of this taxon. These leaves form a dense basal rosette and are rigid, with parallel venation typical of monocots, and are well adapted to the exposed, high-light environments of open savannas and wet grasslands. Abolboda linearifolia inhabits the seasonally flooded plains, tepui slopes, and white-sand savannas of the Guiana region, including parts of Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and northern Brazil. These ecosystems are characterized by highly leached, acidic soils with minimal organic matter, creating challenging growing conditions that favor specialized plant lineages such as the Xyridaceae. The plant produces erect, slender flowering scapes that overtop the leaf rosette, bearing a terminal spike of small flowers. Flowers in the Xyridaceae are typically trimerous with petals that may be blue, violet, or yellow depending on the species, and are pollinated by small insects. Abolboda linearifolia is one of the more morphologically distinctive species in the genus due to its particularly slender leaf profile. The genus Abolboda is entirely Neotropical, with all species restricted to South America, and is most closely related to the larger genus Xyris within the family. Together, Abolboda and Xyris form the core of the Xyridaceae, a family of approximately 400 species that occupy a broad range of wetland and savanna habitats across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, though they achieve their greatest diversity in South America.
