Aa weddelliana

Aa weddelliana is a terrestrial orchid in the family Orchidaceae, order Asparagales, and a member of the high-Andean genus Aa. The species epithet weddelliana honors Hugh Algernon Weddell, a prominent French-British botanist of the nineteenth century renowned for his extensive botanical explorations of South America, particularly in Bolivia and Peru. Weddell conducted landmark research on Andean plants and published major works on the flora of Bolivia, contributing immensely to knowledge of Andean plant diversity. His contributions to botany made him an important figure whose name was attached to numerous plant species discovered during or after his explorations. Aa weddelliana is a compact, ground-dwelling herbaceous perennial native to the high-altitude grasslands and puna ecosystems of the central Andes, likely occurring in Bolivia and Peru — the regions most closely associated with Weddell's extensive fieldwork. Like all Aa species, the plant produces a basal rosette of firm, lance-shaped to elliptic leaves from which an erect flowering stem emerges, bearing a dense spike of small, bilaterally symmetrical orchid flowers. The flowers feature three sepals, two lateral petals, a specialized lip, and a fused reproductive column — the fundamental floral plan of the Orchidaceae that has remained relatively conserved throughout orchid evolution. The open puna grasslands where this orchid grows are characterized by sparse, low-growing vegetation, cold winds, and strongly seasonal patterns of rainfall and drought. Aa weddelliana depends on mycorrhizal fungi for nutrient acquisition in the thin, acidic soils of these habitats. Livestock overgrazing and burning pose ongoing threats to puna ecosystems and the orchids they support.
