Leysera callicornia

Leysera callicornia is a small annual or perennial herb in the family Asteraceae, belonging to the genus Leysera, a small group of composites native primarily to southern Africa, particularly South Africa and Namibia, with some species extending into the Mediterranean region. The genus contains only a few recognized species and belongs to the tribe Asteraceae (in the broad sense) or Inuleae depending on classification. The epithet 'callicornia' likely derives from Greek meaning 'beautiful horns' or 'beautiful rays,' possibly referring to attractive ray florets or appendages. Leysera species are small, often aromatic herbs or dwarf shrublets with narrow, often linear or terete leaves that may be glandular and sticky. Capitula are solitary or few, with yellow ray florets and disc florets, the rays often conspicuous relative to the small plant size. The involucre is small with few rows of phyllaries, often with papery or scarious margins. Achenes are ribbed and bear a pappus of scales or bristles. Leysera species inhabit dry, open habitats including Fynbos, Karoo, Namaqualand desert margins, and Renosterveld shrublands in southern Africa, as well as similar Mediterranean scrublands in North Africa. These plants are adapted to winter rainfall climates with long dry summers, often flowering in spring following winter rains. The South African flora is renowned for its exceptional plant diversity and high endemism, and Leysera represents the contribution of small-flowered composites to this remarkable flora.
