The genus Verbesina is a large New World group comprising approximately 300 species distributed from the southern United States through Mexico, Central America, and South America, with the greatest diversity in Mexico and Central America. The epithet 'synethes' may derive from Greek meaning 'accustomed' or 'habitual,' possibly referring to a characteristic habitat preference or morphological trait. Verbesina species are typically erect herbs or shrubs with alternate or opposite leaves, often with decurrent leaf bases that form conspicuous wings along the stem—a characteristic feature giving rise to the common name 'wingstems.' Capitula are radiate, with yellow ray florets and yellow or sometimes brownish disc florets. The involucre has two to several rows of herbaceous phyllaries. Achenes are typically compressed and winged, with a pappus of two persistent awns or scales. Verbesina species inhabit forest margins, disturbed habitats, roadsides, slopes, and riparian areas across their range. Many species are secondary succession pioneers, colonizing disturbed ground effectively. Some Verbesina species in Mexico and Central America are used in traditional medicine.
