Abildgaardia mexicana

Abildgaardia mexicana is a sedge in the family Cyperaceae, order Poales, distributed primarily in Mexico and Central America. As its specific epithet indicates, the species has a strong association with Mexico, where it inhabits open tropical and subtropical landscapes including grasslands, rocky hillsides, pine-oak forest margins, and seasonally dry or wet environments characteristic of the Mexican floristic province. Like other members of the genus Abildgaardia, this is a perennial or annual grass-like herb with slender, often triangular stems, narrow linear leaves, and reduced flowers arranged in spikelets. The family Cyperaceae is one of the largest families of flowering plants, with over 5,500 species globally, and its members are adapted to a wide range of habitats from arctic tundra to tropical rainforests. In Mexico, Abildgaardia mexicana occupies a niche within the diverse and species-rich flora of Mesoamerica. The region harbours extraordinary plant diversity due to its complex topography, varied climate zones, and position as a meeting ground of North and South American floras. This sedge contributes to ground-layer diversity in open ecosystems and provides microhabitat and food resources for invertebrates and small vertebrates. Its wind-pollinated flowers produce small achene fruits dispersed by wind and water.
