Abildgaardia schoenoides is a sedge in the family Cyperaceae, order Poales. The specific epithet schoenoides means resembling Schoenus, another genus within Cyperaceae characterised by dark, often blackish spikelets and a rush-like habit. This name suggests that Abildgaardia schoenoides shares certain superficial resemblances in habit or inflorescence with Schoenus species, reflecting the morphological convergence frequently encountered within the sedge family. The plant is a grass-like perennial or annual herb typical of the genus Abildgaardia, with narrow linear leaves, solid and often triangular stems, and terminal inflorescences comprising one to several spikelets. As a member of Cyperaceae, it produces small, wind-pollinated flowers lacking petals, with reproductive structures enclosed by overlapping glumes. The fruit is a small achene, the precise form and ornamentation of which are important in species identification. Abildgaardia schoenoides inhabits tropical and subtropical open environments, likely including moist grasslands, seasonally flooded areas, and the margins of wetland habitats, consistent with the ecological preferences of its genus and family. Cyperaceae as a whole is a dominant family in many tropical and temperate wetland ecosystems. The genus Abildgaardia has its primary diversity in Africa and Asia. Species boundaries within the genus are complex, and relationships to allied genera including Fimbristylis, Bulbostylis, and Schoenus continue to be investigated through taxonomic and molecular studies.
