Aa aurantiaca is a species of terrestrial orchid in the family Orchidaceae, order Asparagales, native to high-altitude Andean regions of South America. It is a member of the genus Aa, a group of ground-dwelling orchids adapted to the cool, exposed grassland and shrubland ecosystems of the high Andes, including the páramo of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. The species epithet aurantiaca means 'orange-colored' in Latin, a name that suggests the presence of orange pigmentation in the flowers, making this species potentially distinctive among its genus for its warm floral coloration — a relatively uncommon trait in Aa orchids. Like all members of the genus, Aa aurantiaca is a compact herbaceous perennial that forms a basal rosette of leaves from which an erect raceme of small flowers is produced. The leaves are typically succulent or leathery in texture, suited to the high-altitude environment where temperature swings, strong ultraviolet radiation, and periodic drought are regular challenges. The small flowers are arranged densely along the flowering spike and possess the complex three-dimensional structure typical of the orchid family. Pollinators of high-Andean Aa orchids include small bees and flies that are active in mountain grassland environments. As with many Andean orchid species, Aa aurantiaca is adapted to soils that are often thin, well-drained, and nutrient-poor. Habitat loss from overgrazing, burning of páramo, and climate-driven shifts in vegetation zones represent the primary conservation concerns for this species.
