Aa mandonii is a terrestrial orchid belonging to the family Orchidaceae, order Asparagales, placed within the Andean genus Aa. The species epithet mandonii honors Guillaume Mandon, a French botanist and plant collector of the nineteenth century who conducted extensive botanical explorations in Bolivia and other parts of South America, making valuable collections that contributed to the scientific knowledge of Andean plant diversity. Aa mandonii inhabits the high-altitude grasslands and shrublands of the Andes, likely occurring in Bolivia — the country most closely associated with Mandon's fieldwork — as well as in adjacent Peru and Argentina. Like all Aa species, this orchid grows as a compact herbaceous perennial, producing a basal rosette of firm, elliptic to lance-shaped leaves adapted to the environmental stresses of montane habitats above 3,000 meters elevation. The leaves provide a foundation from which a slender, erect flowering stem emerges, bearing a dense raceme of small, bilaterally symmetrical flowers. The flowers display the characteristic complexity of the Orchidaceae: three sepals forming the outer floral whorl; two petals and a modified third petal, the lip, forming the inner whorl; and a central column housing both anthers and the stigma. The lip of Aa mandonii, as in other members of the genus, plays a critical role in attracting and orienting the small insect pollinators that visit the flowers in the high-Andean environment. This species, like many Andean orchids, depends on intact mycorrhizal communities in the soil for successful reproduction and long-term persistence. Overgrazing and burning of grasslands are principal threats.
