Abelmoschus hostilis is a plant species in the family Malvaceae, order Malvales, assigned to the genus Abelmoschus, a group of tropical herbs and subshrubs closely allied to Hibiscus. The specific epithet hostilis, meaning hostile or bristly in Latin, likely refers to the notably dense, stiff, and prickle-like hairs that armour the stems and leaves of this species, rendering them rough or irritating to touch, a more extreme expression of the hairiness found across many members of the genus. This morphological trait may serve as a physical defence against herbivory. Abelmoschus hostilis is native to tropical regions and is associated with forest margins, disturbed ground, and open scrubby vegetation where it benefits from adequate sunlight. Like its relatives, it would bear alternate, palmately lobed leaves with stipules, and large, five-petaled flowers typical of the hibiscus alliance, likely in shades of yellow or cream with a darker basal centre. The flowers attract pollinators including bees and butterflies. The fruit would be a pubescent or bristly capsule containing several seeds, consistent with the genus. Across the genus Abelmoschus, species have been used in traditional medicine for their mucilaginous properties and as sources of fibre. The ecology of Abelmoschus hostilis within its native range is incompletely understood, and systematic study of its population biology, reproductive ecology, and phytochemistry would contribute to a fuller understanding of this genus in tropical ecosystems.
